Believe in Belize : Dis da fi Dem
Helping others is a big motivator for us here at South, especially when it hits close to home. Belize, located in Central America just above Guatemala and Honduras, is generally considered a Third World country in terms of wealth and resources for the population. Our Director of HR, Jardyn’s parents live in the Toledo district on the coast, where we are told that the food is good and the people live simply, and happily. However, being mostly rural and underdeveloped there are some improvements to be made for the benefit of society. There are already a few non-profit organizations lending hands to help with necessities around the beautiful nation, but what about the kids? Children throughout various districts of Belize lack appropriate equipment and clothing for the main thing they enjoy most: playing sports. Since we have a ton of former (and wannabe-pro) athletes around the office, let’s see if we can’t gather some gently-used footballs and help out some smiling faces 🙂 🙂 🙂
With that being said, we at South are excited to announce the emergence of a new non-profit organization born here in this very office! We always have time to contribute to making the world a better place, in any way that we can. Dis da fi Dem is a spin on a common nationalistic phrase for Kriol Belizeans: Dis da fi wi (“This is for we”), claiming ownership for a very proud people. While choosing to concentrate on children’s sports specifically in the Toledo District of Belize at this time, this is merely the beginning of what Dis da fi Dem will accomplish in the future for the kids and, therefore, for Belizean society all-around.
Stay tuned for details on how to get involved, or about our upcoming debut project beginning June 25! To get a head start, we’ll soon need lots of: footballs, volleyballs, basketballs, softballs, gloves, bats, helmets, protective sports equipment, and, most importantly, children’s shoes and/or cleats. We are so excited to see where this new opportunity takes us!
